St. Peter-in-Chains - Doncaster at Chequer Road, Doncaster, South Yorkshire DN1 2AA UK - Foreword from the Bishop

Foreword from the Bishop

Bishop John Rawsthorne
A message from the Bishop on the consecration of the new Church, 1988 St. Peter's parish In Doncaster has a long and glorious history. All the surrounding parishes In the Doncaster area were founded from St. Peter's. In those days the Church was on Prince's Street and It was a Church much loved and hallowed by prayer. But the day came when It was apparent that this building was getting old and was too small. So, with great courage, Monsignor Canon T. Abberton bought the present site on Chequer Road and built the new Church, Hall and Presbytery. I remember the day when Bishop Wheeler and I laid foundation stones and that great Palm Sunday when Cardinal Heenan opened the Church and celebrated Holy Mass. Since then the Church and Hall have been in constant service, and all the while the overdraft has been whittled away. It is with immense joy that I consecrate this great Church on the Feast of S.S. Peter and Paul, 1988. This Consecration signals a completion of past endevour and makes everyone mindful and grateful of the tremendous effort of the many people who have made it possible. May we all be worthy of them. BISHOP OF HALLAM
