| St. Peter's Charity Cycle 2008 |
Doncaster have been in training since last October to undertake a Cycle
Pilgrimage from Canterbury to Rome. This will follow the old Pilgrim Route
known as the Francigena. This ancient path is not suitable for road bikes
but the route worked out closely follows it. A group of nine pilgrims will
set out from Canterbury on Monday 4th August scheduled to arrive in Rome
21st/22nd August. The purpose is to reap spiritual benefits and to pray at
the Tombs of St. Peter [Parish Patron] and St. Paul [to celebrate the
Pauline Year]. It is also the hope of the pilgrims to meet His Holiness Pope
Benedict. XV1

The spiritual benefits are already manifested in the desire of the pilgrims
to use this occasion to raise funds for Charities. These are Let the
Children Live! A Charity dedicated to rescue Children from the streets of
Columbia website http://www.letthechildrenlive.org
Chernobyl Children Life Line [Doncaster Link]. A Charity which enables
children and family members to be brought to England, for nourishment and
treatment to combat the ever present Radioactivity in their towns and
villages. They are hosted by local families. Website http://www.ccll.org.uk/
The Shrine of Our Lady of Doncaster: To help complete the Prayer Garden and
Tranquillity Zone which will be open to all and an added facility for
pilgrims to the Shrine. This is the only Shrine in the Diocese and this is
the first appeal to the Diocese for support. No website yet.
This Pilgrimage is a major undertaking covering over 1100 miles, supporting
three charities and deserves your support. Apart from the spiritual benefits
and the fundraising, it also raises the profile of a more healthy lifestyle
and encourages living more simply. Accommodation will be a mix of
camp-sites, religious institutions and youth hostels. Some parishioners are
baking cakes, as sustenance, and offers of drinks packs have been received.
Any help you can offer will be gratefully received.
The group is made up of nine pilgrims; seven cyclists and two drivers for
the support van. The picture shows six cyclists, the seventh was unavoidably
detained. L to R
